Layering Spring Dresses For Fall

I recently set up a poll on my Instagram asking what kind of style session video they’d like to see and layering dresses for Fall won by a landslide! I put together this quick video featuring 6 different ways to try. Give it a watch and then let’s talk about it!

  1. Throw on a chunky sweater.

This is my go-to look for colder weather and has been for years. The key to nailing this look is the perfect sweater. It’s got to be chunky! If it’s thin you’ll be able to see the details of the dress underneath. If you only have thin options- opt for a dark color and it will be less noticeable. Length is also important. For this look I chose a cropped sweater, but if you went for something a bit longer you’d have to add a belt. Put the belt on and cinch it at your waist and discreetly tuck the sweater into the belt. You can watch a super quick tutorial here!

2. Layer with a cozy cardigan.

The key to layering a cardigan over a dress is again, the length. It’s all about proportions. So when there’s a cinched waist on a dress- I’ll either wear a cardigan that hits exactly where the dress cinches, or longer. Since the dress I chose has an empire waist, if I wanted a shorter length cardigan- it would need to be cropped to where the dress cinches and I’m personally not a fan of boleros (a cardigan that is typically cropped that short). So in this case I needed to go long!

3. Top it off with a leather jacket.

This is a pretty easy one. All you need to do is find the right leather jacket for you! I personally prefer faux leather and I’m pretty specific about my fit. I lean more towards a cropped length. The cropped length is great for midi length or maxi dresses. If you wanted to try a more oversized or longer leather jacket- that could be fun with a mini dress.

4. Layer over a turtleneck.

This one takes a specific dress. The key to nailing this layer is the right neckline. You need just the right amount of turtleneck to show. I think it looks best with shirt dresses, but if you don’t have a shirt dress- you can try a similar style to this one. It’s just a button front dress. I also like wrap dress, but make sure the V neck isn’t too wide. A helpful hint for a wrap dress is to chose one that’s more modest, and crosses right above your cleavage line. Also, for the turtleneck- try a fitted one. Turtlenecks advertised as layering pieces are best.

5. Throw on a lightweight jacket.

This one is pretty universal. It’s all about just topping it with a lightweight jacket. Specifically your favorite (because this one’s mine)! Even though I’m labeling this one as a lightweight jacket, this is suede and it will definitely keep me warm. Because of that I paired it with sneakers so this will work in early Fall, but as it gets colder you can switch to a tall boot.

5. Oversized jacket and tights.

I had to throw in at least one look with lights- of course! ‘Tis the season. When it comes to wearing tights- I usually only like to wear them with mini’s (this is totally a personal preference). The only other time I’ll wear them is if I’m wearing a long dress with tall boots- so you just get a tiny glimpse of them. Sneakers or ankle boots… they are a no-go for me. I think mini dresses look adorable with oversized jackets. It’s a nod to ‘90s grunge and I’m totally here for it. I chose denim, but you could throw on any type of oversized jacket for this look. Try to make sure the jacket is long too, not just wide.

Hope this helps when it comes to layering for Fall! If you’re looking to layer for winter- you can add tights to all these looks. Or I’ll switch out the midi dresses for a maxi dress and hide fleece lined leggings for even more warmth!
